How to get rid of ants, control and deter ants in your home naturally and chemical free.

Here are some things you may want to try before reaching for that can of cancer causing insecticide to control ants.

Natural Ant Repellent:

- Pouring lemon juice around areas ants frequent is a great ant deterrent.

- Sprinkle cinnamon or place in cheesecloth bags in affected areas. Cinnamon was a very popular choice with quite a few readers reporting it being highly effective ant deterrant.

- Baking soda can deter ants, pour a solid line in areas of activity and they won't cross it.

- A ring of coffee grounds around sensitive plants can discourage ants.

- A puree blend of orange peel and water can be applied to an area to discourage ants from crossing.

- Ants hate vinegar, spray it around doorways and other areas they frequent to repel them. A small container of vinegar mixed with honey placed in affected areas appears to get rid of ants.

- A reader reported baby powder stopped ants dead in their tracks.

- Pouring boiling water over their tracks (destroys the ant scent trail).

- Sprinkling a circle of ground garlic cloves or garlic extract around pet food bowls as a natural ant deterrent.

- Removing rocks and wood from around the garden, an ants favorite home, will help you get rid of ants.

- Planting mint around vegetable patches, flower beds and around the house.

- Some people have found that cinnamon sprinkled across ant scent trails to be very effective.

- Citrus oil is a good ant deterrent, it can soaked into a piece of string and place around scent trails.

Ant Termination Tips
A greener way to kill ants:

A mixture of 1/8 teaspoon of powdered borax and sugar or honey will attract and kill ants.
Worker ants take it back to the nest and pass it onto other ants, killing the colony.
While borax in small quantities is relatively harmless to larger animals, in big enough doses it can kill, so be cautious about placement and keep out of reach of pets and children.

An Explanation for SID's? (Could the Serendipity Mattress Coverbe the Answer?)

Could chemicals in mattresses combined with fungus cause crib death?

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), or crib death, is the unexpected death of an infant which is not explained by any known cause in the baby’s health or in its environment. It is the leading cause of death in infants from one to six months of age. SIDS risk begins at about two weeks after birth, then declines after a peak in the third month when the baby’s immunity acquired from the mother tapers off, and is rare after one year. Since WW II about 1 million infant deaths have been attributed to SIDS. SIDS deaths were quite rare before that time. It occurs almost exclusively in Europe, Australia/New Zealand and the United States. The United States alone continues to have over 3,000 SIDS deaths each year.

The Mattress Connection

Many ideas have been proposed to explain SIDS, but none has been comprehensive or convincing until the theory presented by Barry Richardson, a British expert in materials degradation. His theory was validated by the research of Dr. T. James Sprott, a New Zealand chemist and forensic scientist.

Their research demonstrates that SIDS may be the result of accidental poisoning due to toxic gases released from baby mattresses. These gases are produced by the interaction of common household fungi with phosphorus, arsenic and antimony, chemicals which are either present naturally in the mattresses or which have been added as flame retardant chemicals.

The fungi are harmless by themselves but feed on these chemicals. The byproducts are the gases phosphine (PH3), arsine (AsH3) and stibine (SbH3). These nearly odorless gases breathed even in small quantities for an extended time can interrupt the choline/acetylcholine transfer of nervous impulses from the brain to the heart and lungs. This shuts down the central nervous system; heart function and breathing stop. The gases are heavier than air, and about 1,000 times more poisonous than carbon monoxide. A baby sleeping on its stomach is in the zone above the mattress where the gases are most dense. Repeated exposure to these gases, especially in combination with other insults to a baby’s immune systems, can result in toxic overload and death.

There has been no research to date which has disproved this theory or offered a better one. Research in 1994 by Richardson showed high levels of antimony in livers of SIDS babies. Antimony is not normally present in a healthy baby, and does not show up in autopsies of babies who slept on mattresses free of phosphorus, arsenic and antimony. This means that SIDS is an environmental problem, not a medical one. Areas of the world where mattresses containing these chemicals are used have a much higher incidence of SIDS. Areas in the world where fungus is ubiquitous, such as in Japan, Hong Kong and the Pacific Islands, but where mattresses do not contain these chemicals do not have a problem with SIDS.

The Fungus Connection

Fungal growth is sped up when moisture from the baby’s body such as perspiration, urine, drool, etc. penetrates the bedding and provides a growth medium for the fungus. Growth is also sped up by increased body heat, especially if a baby has a temperature from tightly wrapped covers, higher room temperature, infection in a compromised immune system, and/or a reaction to vaccinations. Boy babies with their increased metabolism have a 30 percent higher incidence of SIDS than girl babies.

British researcher Peter Mitchell showed that babies later in the birth order have a higher incidence of SIDS deaths because over time, repeated use of the same mattress increases the amount of fungal spores present. The risk doubles with each child. Lower income families have more SIDS deaths because they are more likely to reuse bedding rather than buy new bedding for each child. Children of poor single mothers are at seven times the risk for SIDS.

The Richardson theory was first made public in Britain in 1989. Public relations campaigns in both Britain and New Zealand have significantly reduced SIDS deaths. Manufacturers in Britain withdrew the use of toxic chemicals in their products. This was coupled with a campaign to have all babies sleep on their backs. Unfortunately there is resistance from researchers and health authorities in these countries and the United States which prevents information campaigns from being as effective as they might be. Authorities seeking to avoid possible lawsuits may try to suppress this information.

How to Protect Infants

It is important to protect infants from exposure to these gases. The heavier-than-air gases drift towards the floor, so babies are somewhat protected by sleeping on their backs. Phosphine is only slightly heavier than air though, so it poses a hazard to babies in any position. After the age of five months a baby can turn itself over and once again receive higher exposure. It is ideal to protect babies from all contact with these gases. Covering a mattress with a barrier to exposure is the alternative if chemical-free bedding isn’t available. Dr. Sprott developed a mattress cover as well as protocols for using polyethylene (called polythene in other parts of the world) or rubber sheeting to safely wrap mattresses. The directions as given by Dr. Sprott are:

1. Mattresses (including sheepskins) should be wrapped with a thick, natural-color (not black) polyethylene sheeting or surgical rubber sheeting like the Serendipity Mattress Cover. Polyethylene suitable for this purpose is available through most garden centers. Don’t use PVC (polyvinyl chloride) as it frequently contains phosphorus and antimony compounds.

2. Place the polyethylene or rubber over the top of the mattress and down the ends and sides, and then secure it firmly beneath the mattress with strong adhesive tape [that doesn’t give off fumes itself].

3. The polyethylene or rubber on the underside of the mattress should not be made airtight. It must be airtight on the top and sides of the mattress.

4. The best under-blanket for use on a wrapped mattress is fleecy cotton.

5. The advice to wrap mattresses applies to every mattress on which a baby is put down to sleep, including adults’ mattresses, mattresses of other children and all mattresses made of or covered with natural products such as sheep fleeces, goat skins, kapok, tree bark, coconut fiber, etc.

6. Proprietary mattress covers should not be used unless they have been shown by chemical analysis to be free from the elements in question.

7. Babies should never be put down to sleep on the mattress of another baby or older child unless the mattress is wrapped.

A baby is at risk in any place where these toxic gases exist. Examine the materials in strollers as well, as quilts can contain antimony and phosphorus and are seldom washed. It is also recommended to have ample ventilation wherever a baby is sleeping. Bumper guards in cribs can be placed around the upper part and partway down the sides of the crib, but not all the way around, so that gases can sink down to the floor.

Reduced Death is Good Evidence

Since the late 1950s New Zealand had possibly the highest incidence of SIDS in the world. The mattress-wrapping campaign promoted in New Zealand since 1994 by Dr. Sprott, midwives and other health care professionals for SIDS prevention has had a success rate of 100 percent among the over 100,000 of those who have used it. There have been no SIDS deaths reported in families using the wrapped mattresses. From 1994 to 1997 the nationwide rate fell from 2.1/1000 live births to 1.4/1000, a reduction of 33 percent. The Caucasian community within New Zealand, having more widely adopted this practice, had a SIDS rate reduction of over 60 percent. All SIDS deaths within this period were on non-wrapped beds. There were no other changes in public approach to the SIDS problem.

Do Vaccinations Play a Role?

There is research by other physicians which links SIDS fatalities to vaccinations. Dr. Sprott makes the case that vaccinations are a contributing factor only and not the major culprit. Reaction to vaccinations can cause a spike in the baby’s temperature, which is the problem. Higher body heat activates the growth of fungus in the mattress, which feeds more on the phosphorus, arsenic and antimony and produces more toxic gases. Vaccinations become a greatly reduced threat if a baby who has just been vaccinated sleeps on a wrapped bed.

SIDS has also been attributed to other factors. Dr.Sprott makes it clear that while these have other effects on infant health, they do not either prevent or cause SIDS. Breast feeding, important to health in other ways, will not override toxic effects of harmful gases. Sleeping with your baby is helpful for emotional bonding, but can be hazardous if the parents’ bed is outgassing toxic chemicals. Smoking during or after pregnancy is an additional insult which can weaken a baby, but the mattress chemicals are the ultimate cause of death. Poor nutrition alone won’t cause SIDS.

Dr. Sprott stresses that if the mattress on which a baby sleeps is correctly wrapped, any sleeping position is safe, any mattress can be used, bed sharing is safe, bumper pads can be used to prevent injury, and there is no risk of SIDS.

Eggnog Hot Chocolate Recipe

2 1/2 cups organic milk or soya milk
12 ounces bittersweet chocolate chips
4 cups of eggnog
1 tsp vanilla extract
whipped cream

Add milk and chocolate to a medium saucepan and melt on low heat.
Stir until the chocolate has completely melted, then add eggnog.
Heat until hot.
Remove from stove and stir in the vanilla.
Pour the eggnog hot chocolate into mugs topping with whipped cream if desired.

Traditional Eggnog Recipe - Alcoholic

12 separated eggs
6 cups of organic milk or soya milk
2 cups of cream
2 cups bourbon
1 1/2 cups of sugar
3/4 cup of brandy
2 teaspoons of ground nutmeg

Using a mixer in a large bowl, beat the egg yolks with the sugar until firm - approx 8 minutes.
Slowly add the bourbon and brandy.
Let cool in the fridge for a few hours.
35 minutes before you plan on serving the eggnog, add the milk and ground nutmeg.
In a separate bowl, beat the cream on high until the cream can form peaks.
In another separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold the egg whites into the egg yolks.
Then gently fold the cream into the egg mixture.
Spoon into cups garnishing with nutmeg.

Remove the Brandy and Bourbon for a non-alcoholic eggnog recipe.

Alex Jones is launching a new campaign to inform the public about the toxic chemical fluoride being added to tap water across the country. While EPA scientists and workers are calling for an end to water fluoridation, the government is doing everything in its power to continue and even increase the amount of toxic chemicals being added to public water supplies.

We are also calling people to search for the term “poison tap water” in order to drive this vitally important subject to the top of Google trends and educate millions of people who would never otherwise come into contact with this information.

While sodium fluoride is commonly used as a rat poison, globalists and eugenicists have decided to add it to water supplies with the message to the public being that it is good for teeth, despite warnings from the ADA stating that young children risk a disease called dental fluorosis. The Guardian reported that fluoride water can also cause cancer.

Fluoride being artificially added to drinking water in India is causing blindness and deformities amongst children.

Christopher Bryson’s widely acclaimed book The Fluoride Deception includes dozens of peer-reviewed studies showing that sodium fluoride is a deadly neurotoxin that attacks the central nervous system and leads to a multitude of serious health problems. This fact has been covered up by a collusion of government and industry who have reaped financial windfalls while illegally mass medicating the public against their will.

Perhaps the most notable study was conducted by Dr. Phyllis Mullenix Ph.D., a highly respected pharmacologist and toxicologist, who in a 1995 Forsyth Research Institute study found that rats who had fluoride added to their diet exhibited abnormal behavioral traits.

A 2008 Scientific American report concluded that “Scientific attitudes toward fluoridation may be starting to shift” as new evidence emerged of the poison’s link to disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland, as well as lowering IQ.

“Today almost 60 percent of the U.S. population drinks fluoridated water, including residents of 46 of the nation’s 50 largest cities,” reported Scientific American’s Dan Fagin, an award-wining environmental reporter and Director of New York University’s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program.

The Scientific American study “Concluded that fluoride can subtly alter endocrine function, especially in the thyroid — the gland that produces hormones regulating growth and metabolism.”

The report also notes that “a series of epidemiological studies in China have associated high fluoride exposures with lower IQ.”

“Epidemiological studies and tests on lab animals suggest that high fluoride exposure increases the risk of bone fracture, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and diabetics,” writes Fagin.

Fagin interviewed Steven Levy, director of the Iowa Fluoride Study which tracked about 700 Iowa children for sixteen years. Nine-year-old “Iowa children who lived in communities where the water was fluoridated were 50 percent more likely to have mild fluorosis… than [nine-year-old] children living in nonfluoridated areas of the state,” writes Fagin.

The study adds to a growing literature of shocking scientific studies proving fluoride’s link with all manner of health defects, even as governments in the west, including the UK, make plans to mass medicate the population against their will with this deadly toxin. Most Americans already drink artificially fluoridated water.

In 2005, a study conducted at the Harvard School of Dental Health found that fluoride in tap water directly contributes to causing bone cancer in young boys.

“New American research suggests that boys exposed to fluoride between the ages of five and 10 will suffer an increased rate of osteosarcoma – bone cancer – between the ages of 10 and 19,” according to a London Observer article about the study.

Based on the findings of the study, the respected Environmental Working Group lobbied to have fluoride in tap water be added to the US government’s classified list of substances known or anticipated to cause cancer in humans.

Cancer rates in the U.S. have skyrocketed with one in three people now contracting the disease at some stage in their life.

The link to bone cancer has also been discovered by other scientists, but a controversy ensued after it emerged that Harvard Professor Chester Douglass, who downplayed the connection in his final report, was in fact editor-in-chief of The Colgate Oral Health Report, a quarterly newsletter funded by Colgate-Palmolive Co., which makes fluoridated toothpaste.

An August 2006 Chinese study found that fluoride in drinking water damages children’s liver and kidney functions.

Growing opposition to fluoridation of water supplies in light of this evidence is contributing to a scaling back of water fluoridation programs, with voters in places like Mount Pleasant calling for the amount added to be reduced.

With awareness about sodium fluoride on the increase, the establishment is now moving to demonize anyone who raises the issue as a dangerous lunatic. In an official press release, the Fluoride Action Network slams “recent mischaracterizations of fluoridation opponents by political pundits Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann and others in conjunction with Senator Harry Reid’s Nevada re-election campaign.”

As we wrote in June, Keith Olbermann sardonically attacked Nevada primary winner Sharron Angle for speaking out against water fluoridation, “because she thinks the fluoride might be poison.”

Amidst his sophomoric jibes, Olbermann failed to explain why, if fluoride isn’t a poison as he claims, the word “toxic” is written on the packaging of bags of sodium fluoride that are dumped into the water supply of many Americans.

Sodium fluoride is a Part II Poison under the UK Poisons Act 1972. In addition, toothpaste manufacturers are required by law to include the following text on their products, “If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately.”

“In fact, mounting evidence shows that it is harmful to large segments of the population and has helped to create an epidemic of dental fluorosis in children.” On April 12, 2010, Time magazine listed fluoride as one of the “Top Ten Common Household Toxins” and described fluoride as both “neurotoxic and potentially tumorigenic if swallowed.”

FACTS ABOUT FLUORIDE

- Fluoride is a waste by-product of the fertilizer and aluminum industry and it’s also a Part II Poison under the UK Poisons Act 1972.

- Fluoride is one of the basic ingredients in both PROZAC (FLUoxetene Hydrochloride) and Sarin nerve gas (Isopropyl-Methyl-Phosphoryl FLUoride).

- USAF Major George R. Jordan testified before Un-American Activity committees of Congress in the 1950’s that in his post as U.S.-Soviet liaison officer, the Soviets openly admitted to “Using the fluoride in the water supplies in their concentration camps, to make the prisoners stupid, docile, and subservient.”

- The first occurrence of fluoridated drinking water on Earth was found in Germany’s Nazi prison camps. The Gestapo had little concern about fluoride’s supposed effect on children’s teeth; their alleged reason for mass-medicating water with sodium fluoride was to sterilize humans and force the people in their concentration camps into calm submission. - 97% of western Europe has rejected fluoridated water due to the known health risks, however 10% of Britons drink it and the UK government is trying to fast track the fluoridation of the entire country’s water supply.

- In Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg fluoridation of water was rejected because it was classified as compulsive medication against the subject’s will and therefore violated fundamental human rights.

- In November of 2006, the American Dental Association (ADA) advised that parents should avoid giving babies fluoridated water.

- Sources of fluoride include: fluoride dental products, fluoride pesticides, fluoridated pharmaceuticals, processed foods made with fluoridated water, and tea.

Effects Of Oil Spills

Oil slicks do so much more damage than just the initial havoc we see on the news - the effects of oil spills can be very long lasting.

Since first publishing this article in 2007 and even though oil has become even more precious in a world now coming to terms with the fact peak oil is a reality rather than possibility, we've continued to see significant oil leaks and spills occurring on a fairly regular basis.

The Deepwater Horizon BP oil leak disaster currently occurring in the Gulf of Mexico has well and truly eclipsed the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989.

Estimates for the average flow rate of the spill prior to the fitting of a Lower Marine Riser Package (LMRP) Cap Containment System in early June run between 20,000 barrels (840,000 US gallons or 3,200,000 litres) per day and 40,000 barrels (1,700,000 US gallons or 6,400,000 litres) per day.

While the capping and associated pumping is capturing oil, it is not capturing all of it and oil is continuing to spew into the Gulf of Mexico.

Effects of oil spills

When oil is spilled or leaked into in waterways and the ocean, it spreads very quickly with the help of wind and currents. A single gallon of oil can create an oil slick up to a couple of acres in size! The BP oil slick had spread over 580 square miles in just three days.

When oil starts mixing in water, it can change composition and becomes what's known as "mousse". This is a sticky substance that clings even more to whatever it comes in contact with. Many marine animals don't know to avoid a slick and some fish may even be attracted to it as it can resemble food.

Some of the many effects of oil spills on animals coming into contact with crude oil include:

- hypothermia and drowning of birds as the oil breaks down the insulating capabilities of feathers, makes them heavier and compromises flying ability

- hypothermia in some seal pups as the oil destroys insulating fur

- if oil is ingested, it can either poison the animal outright, make them extremely sick or create a level of toxins in their system that then causes poisoning further up the food chain. Birds and other animals often ingest oil when trying to clean themselves. Shellfish and corals are particularly at risk in these scenarios as they cannot escape from an oil slick.

- damage to the airways of birds and animals.

- damage to animal immune systems

- interruption of breeding and fouling of breeding grounds

- thinner bird and turtle egg shells and also damage to fish larvae, causing deformities

- damage to sea grass beds and other shelter/feeding areas

- tainting of algae, which perform a vital role in waterway ecosystems

Even once the oil from an oil spill appears to have dissipated, it can still lurk beneath the surface of beaches and the sea bed, severely affecting marine organisms that burrow, such as crabs, for literally decades. These burrowing creatures are also food for other animals, so the cycle of poisoning continues for many years.

There's really no aspect of a marine and coastal environment that is not in some way adversely affected by an oil spill. The closer the spill occurs to the shoreline, the more pronounced the damage will be due to coastal zones being home to more concentrated and diverse populations of marine, bird and animal life than far out to sea.

World's biggest oil spills.

Here's four of the biggest marine spills in history.

Persian Gulf - January 23, 1991 - up to 1,500,000 tonnes
Gulf of Mexico - June 3, 1979 - 454,000 - 480,000 tonnes
Trinidad and Tobago - July 19, 1979 - 287,000 tonnes
Fergana Valley Uzbekistan - March 2, 1992 - 285,000 tonnes

There have been a total of 14 known marine oil spills consisting of over 100,000 tonnes. One tonne of crude oil is roughly equal to 308 US gallons; so in the Persian Gulf incident, approximately 462 million barrels were spilled - 20 times more than the USA consumes in a day, over a year's worth of consumption for Australia and enough to supply the entire world's crude oil needs for around 5 days.

It's interesting to note that the Exxon Valdez disaster, isn't among the "100,000" club - it wasn't even close at approximately 35,000 tonnes - but it was the largest spill in U.S. history and given where it occurred, one of the biggest ecological disasters the nation has experienced. That spill killed hundreds of thousands of sea birds, thousands of otters, hundreds of seals as well as killer whales, bald eagles and fish. It's not just how much is spilled that plays a role in the effects of oil spills and the devastation that occurs, but where it is spilled.

The effects of oil leaks and spills aren't just on marine life - they have a direct impact on humans too long after the initial media frenzy has died down. Some Alaskan communities were affected by the Exxon Valdez disaster as important commercial fishing and hunting grounds were contaminated for an extended period. Tourism was also affected by the oil spill.

Biodegradable Plastics - A Greener Plastic

Biodegradable plastics made with plant-based materials have been available for many years. Their high cost, however, has meant they have never replaced traditional non-degradable plastics in the mass market. A new Australian venture is producing affordable biodegradable plastics that might change all that.

Our whole world seems to be wrapped in plastic. Almost every product we buy, most of the food we eat and many of the liquids we drink come encased in plastic. In Australia around 1 million tonnes of plastic materials are produced each year and a further 587,000 tonnes are imported. Packaging is the largest market for plastics, accounting for over a third of the consumption of raw plastic materials – Australians use 6 billion plastic bags every year!

Plastic packaging provides excellent protection for the product, it is cheap to manufacture and seems to last forever. Lasting forever, however, is proving to be a major environmental problem. Another problem is that traditional plastics are manufactured from non-renewable resources – oil, coal and natural gas.

Plastics that break down

In an effort to overcome these shortcomings, biochemical researchers and engineers have long been seeking to develop biodegradable plastics that are made from renewable resources, such as plants.

The term biodegradable means that a substance is able to be broken down into simpler substances by the activities of living organisms, and therefore is unlikely to persist in the environment. There are many different standards used to measure biodegradability, with each country having its own. The requirements range from 90 per cent to 60 per cent decomposition of the product within 60 to 180 days of being placed in a standard composting environment.

The reason traditional plastics are not biodegradable plastics is because their long polymer molecules are too large and too tightly bonded together to be broken apart and assimilated by decomposer organisms. However, plastics based on natural plant polymers derived from wheat or corn starch have molecules that are readily attacked and broken down by microbes.

Plastics can be produced from starch

Starch is a natural polymer. It is a white, granular carbohydrate produced by plants during photosynthesis and it serves as the plant's energy store. Cereal plants and tubers normally contain starch in large proportions. Starch can be processed directly into a bioplastic but, because it is soluble in water, articles made from starch will swell and deform when exposed to moisture, limiting its use. This problem can be overcome by modifying the starch into a different polymer. First, starch is harvested from corn, wheat or potatoes, then microorganisms transform it into lactic acid, a monomer. Finally, the lactic acid is chemically treated to cause the molecules of lactic acid to link up into long chains or polymers, which bond together to form a plastic called polylactide (PLA).

PLA can be used for products such as plant pots and disposable nappies. It has been commercially available since 1990, and certain blends have proved successful in medical implants, sutures and drug delivery systems because of their capacity to dissolve away over time. However, because PLA is significantly more expensive than conventional plastics it has failed to win widespread consumer acceptance.

Sugar Can Make Electricity?

It’s not exactly sugar juice, but the sugar cane fiber left over after the juice is extracted, which is burned to make electricity. The fiber is called bagasse, and is being used in cogeneration power plants. Once it dries, it is burned in boilers to make steam. The steam is used to create electricity. Emissions from burning bagasse are lower than for burning fossil fuels.

In Florida, a sugar mill facility called Florida Crystals powers their business operation and 60,000 homes with electricity generated from burning bagasse (and wood waste when it is not sugar cane season). The reason sugar cane can be used to make sugar and generate electricity is that it is very efficient in converting sunlight into energy. The company estimates it saves hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon emissions by burning bagasse to run their facility, rather than fossil fuels. They are one of the largest sugar producers in the U.S., and run the largest biomass plant in North America.

Sugar cane production is a large industry in Brazil, and they use bagasse power plants to provide about 3 percent of their electrical consumption. An estimate has stated that number could be increased to 15 percent by 2020.

Just last February, a deal was struck to begin construction of a 40 megawatt bagasse fueled power plant in Brazil. Other countries are using sugar cane fiber also. Kenya reportedly has the potential of producing 300 megawatts of electricity from bagasse. Currently they are producing 38MW.

A megawatt is one million watts. One megawatt could power between 400 and 900 homes depending on consumption rates.

Disposable Diapers
How are they made:
Disposable diapers have a waterproof exterior made from a non-woven polypropylene (plastic), multiple moisture wicking internal layers with an absorbent inner core. The three main material inputs that go into a disposable diaper are plastics, fluffed wood pulp and SAP (super absorbent polymer). The manufacturing process can vary widely between disposable diaper producers. Wherever possible, you should look for disposable diapers that use unbleached wood pulp from sustainable managed forests. However, the largest environmental impact of disposable diapers is due to the plastic exteriors.

How is the diaper intended to be used:
Disposable diapers are intended to be used once and than thrown away.

How is the diaper to be disposed of:
Once a disposable diaper has been used, the only option is to throw it out. It is estimated approximately 27 billion disposable diapers are sold every year in the United States resulting in 3.5 million tons of diaper waste going into landfills each year. The high grade plastic exteriors can take hundred of years to break down in landfills. Because of this, disposable diapers are considered the least environmentally friendly diaper product available on the market. The proper disposal method for disposable diapers is to scrape the fecal matter into the toilet before throwing the diaper in the garbage. In reality, this almost never occurs. Fecal matter than ends up in landfills can leach into the ground water contaminating water supplies and wetlands in the surrounding area.

Cloth Diapers
Cloth diapers have improved significantly over the past decade. Velcro, buttons and snaps have replaced the traditional pins used to attach cloth diapers making them significantly more user friendly.

How are they made:
With cloth diapers, there are diaper covers and the cloth diapers themselves. The diaper covers can be made from a variety of materials, some natural and some synthetic. It is estimated a baby will use 25 to 30 diaper covers and 50 to 70 cloth diapers before the baby is potty trained. The environmental impact of the diaper covers will largely depend on the material used and the manufacturing process.

Industrialized cotton is the most common material used for cloth diapers. Relatively speaking, cotton is a very demanding crop requiring significant amounts of pesticides, artificial fertilizers and watering. Cotton is often bleached white creating an additional environmental impact. If you are looking for the most eco friendly diaper choice, whenever possible, you should look for unbleached organic cottons or other materials such as hemp or bamboo for cloth diapers. However, these materials are considerably more expensive than traditional cotton diapers.

How is the diaper intended to be used:
Cloth diapers are intended to be washable and fully reusable. When assessing the environmental impact of cloth diapers, it is important to remember the impact of repeatedly washing and drying the diapers.

Look for opportunities to lessen the environmental impact of washing and drying cloth diapers to truly make them an eco friendly baby diaper. Use an energy efficient washing machine (Energy Star rated), always have a full load when you run the machine, use eco friendly laundry detergents that will reduce the load on water treatment facilities and hang your diapers to dry to avoid using your dryer.

In addition to the environmental impact of washing and drying cloth diapers, it can take significant time. A laundry service can save you the time and trouble of washing your diapers. In addition, laundry services may be able to reduce the water and energy consumption by using more efficient commercial machines.

How is the diaper to be disposed of:
Cloth diapers can often be used for subsequent children extending their useful life. When a cloth diaper can no longer be used as a diaper, they can be cut up making useful cleaning rags for around the house. When it comes time to finally dispose of a cloth diaper, a high proportion of the contents will decompose in a landfill. A synthetic diaper cover will take significantly longer to break down than a natural material diaper cover.

Bamboo Diapers... A Cloth Eco Friendly Baby Diaper Option
Though not nearly as well known as cotton cloth diapers, if you are in the market for cloth diapers, you might want to consider bamboo diapers. Unlike cotton, bamboo requires no fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides to grow. Bamboo is a renewable resource that grows very quickly. Click here for additional information on Bamboo Fabric .

Bamboo diapers are cool, comfortable and breathable for your baby's skin. Bamboo diapers have better moisture absorption than cotton diapers and bamboo has some natural antibacterial properties. They release the least amount of chemicals and are the least toxic of all the diapers. Like a cotton cloth diaper, you will still require an outer cover for a bamboo diaper.

Hybrid Options
One of the most popular choices in eco friendly baby diapers today is the gDiaper. gDiaper stands for green diapers and they consist of a washable cotton diaper cover and a plastic-free toilet flushable diaper refill. g-Diapers are available in Canada and the United States.

How are they made:
The flushable refill is made from cellulose fibers harvested from sustainable softwood plantations. There are no plastic components in the gDiaper unlike traditional disposable diapers. The diaper cover is made from cotton. It is unclear whether industrialized or organic cotton is used for the diaper covers. gDiapers estimate a child will only require 12 to 16 pairs of ‘little g’ outer covers. These covers can also be used again on subsequent children.

How is the diaper intended to be used:
The outer cover is fully washable and should be washed as required. The flushable refill is changed once they have been soiled.

How is the diaper to be disposed of:
The flushable refill liner can be separated from the outside cover and flushed down the toilet. You have to stir the liner in the toilet to help break it up before flushing it down the toilet. The gDiaper starter kit does include a “stir stick” to assist with this. Once the diaper makes its way through your municipal sewage treatment plant, the end result is a biosolid- a safe and rich fertilizer product that can be used in a variety of agricultural settings.

If the flushable liner has only been spoiled with urine (and not feces) you are able to safely add it to your home compost. It is estimated the liner will take approximately 50 to 150 days to break down.

It is important to note that human feces spoiled liners should always be flushed down the toilet to be properly treated at sewge facilities. They should never be composted or thrown in the garbage (a major problem with disposable diapers is the feces spoiled diapers are typically thrown in the garbage).

1/4 cup distilled water

Mix together all the ingredients.

All Purpose Homemade Spray Cleaner

Non-toxic Mold Cleaning

Tea Tree Oil
Nothing natural works for mold and mildew as well as this spray.

Tea tree oil is expensive, but a little goes a very long way.
Note that the smell of tea tree oil is very strong, but it will dissipate in a few days.

2 teaspoons tea tree oil
2 cups water

Combine in a spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas.
Do not rinse.
Makes two cups.

Vinegar Spray
Straight vinegar reportedly kills 82 percent of mold.

The obsession for “fresh” smelling air is skyrocketing. Americans are expected to spend 1.72 billion dollars on air fresheners this year—that’s enough money to buy 82,100 brand new Toyota Prius cars. Air fresheners can provide pleasant smell associations, disguise bad odors, and just make us feel warm and woozy. And itchy and congested and achy and occasionally even convulsive and comatose. Here’s what you need to know about the dangers of air fresheners and tips for living without them.

The craze for air fresheners is rapidly expanding and is even infiltrating the tween and teen demographic with new products being designed to entice the 8 to 18 set. One fun and flirty plug-in comes in girl-friendly flavors and provides a light show. All the more disturbing when one considers a study by the University of Bristol called “Children of the ’90s” (Alspac), which has followed the health and development of 14,000 children since before birth.

The study didn’t analyze the ingredients in air fresheners, just the effects: 32 percent more babies suffered diarrhea in homes where air fresheners were used every day, compared with homes where they were used once a week or less, and they had significantly more earaches in these homes as well. Air fresheners also affected mothers—those who used them daily suffered nearly 10 percent more headaches. Perhaps most surprising is the finding that women who lived in homes with daily air freshener use had a 26 percent increased risk of depression.

Just one whiff of the thick synthetic-smelling perfume of an air freshener leaves me thinking “run away!” But could the ingredients in them really be all that bad? Amid all of the Internet chatter about the dangers of commercial air fresheners is this gem of a study by the California Air Resources Board entitled “Indoor Air Chemistry: Cleaning Agents, Ozone and Toxic Air Contaminants.” (And you too can read all 183 pages of it right here. The study comprised exacting analysis of 21 widely available products from ten large chain store retailers in California. The products included a range of household cleaners and plug-in air fresheners.

The conclusion of the study was that the use of some air fresheners can produce toxic pollutants when used in the presence of ozone (a form of oxygen). Even minimal ozone concentrations were enough to drive significant indoor chemistry. When the chemicals emitted from the air-fresheners are combined with ozone, pollutants of serious health concern are produced. These include formaldehyde (a known human carcinogen and a respiratory irritant with a very low threshold for health effects) and ultrafine pollutant particles. Also of concern is the production of acetaldehyde, organic acids, other oxygenated intermediates, hydrogen peroxide, secondary organic aerosol, and hydroxyl radicals.

Of all of the products studied, air fresheners were the worst offenders. The most serious problems occur when the terpines in the air fresheners mix with ozone. Ozone enters indoor environments with outdoor air and is generally present indoors at levels that are up to 50 percent of outdoor levels. Ozone also may be introduced by indoor sources including devices designed to generate ozone for air purification, air cleaners generating ozone as a byproduct of ionization, and some photocopiers and printers. According to the California Air Resources Board, air cleaners or air “purifiers” that intentionally produce ozone should never be used; they emit very high levels of ozone, a reactive gas that may harm human health.

When feeding baby, it's not just the formula that's important. You need to choose the right baby bottle as well. Recent studies are showing that plastic bottles may not be a good choice after all.

Toxic baby products

One of the basic chemical compounds of plastic baby bottles and nipples is bisphenol A (BPA). It's come under scrutiny after scientists and researchers have documented the health effects from BPA and warned about its health effects. Bisphenol A is now considered an endocrine-disruptor, which mimics the naturally occurring hormone estrogen. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can duplicate, block or exaggerate hormonal responses that control development of the brain, the reproductive system, and other functions.

Of particular concern is this chemical in baby bottles. Infants are more at risk from this chemical. Studies have linked low-dose BPA exposure with such effects as: permanent changes to genital tract; increase prostate weight; decline in testosterone; breast cells predisposed to cancer; prostate cells more sensitive to hormones and cancer; and hyperactivity.

There is enough concern about this issue that there are several campaigns afoot to get the substance banned from children's toys and infants baby bottles. Environmental Defence has an online petition urging the Canadian government and John Baird to take action against bisphenol A. The Bisphenol A Organization has a listing of upcoming U.S. regulations against the chemical.

Good and bad baby bottles

An even more effective way to protest is to simply stop buying plastic baby bottles. If for practical reasons you need to use plastic bottles, avoid those rigid plastics ones made from #7 polycarbonate since these tend to leak BPA. A less-toxic options available is made from #5 plastic. This opaque, less-shiny plastic is thought not to leach BPA. You can find the plastic number on the bottom of most baby bottles.

The almost safest option is tempered glass since there is no chance of any leakage of any kind. More and more companies are starting to manufacture glass bottles once again and consumer demand is at its highest.

Storing breast milk

When storing and freezing breast milk, use wide-mouth glass canning jars, which won't crack when heated or chilled. Nipples or soothers made of #3 PVC should be passed over. This is the soft plastic, also found in soft squeeze or chew toys, has high levels of toxic chemicals, known as adipates and phthalates that easily leak into food. Both these chemicals have been linked to liver, testicular cancer and nerve damage. Clear silicone bottle nipples and pacifiers are safer than plastic or latex ones.

Recommended choices

Here is a list of safe plastic baby bottles complied by the U.S. Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) from their Smart Plastics Guide.

Discard old, scratched baby bottles and "sippy" cups. Plastic that shows signs of wear, such as scratches or a cloudy, crackled appearance leach chemicals more readily.

Heat foods and drinks outside of the plastic, in glass dishes, and then transfer into the plastic only after they are cool enough to eat or drink.

But the Obama administration is betting its new Home Star “Cash for Caulkers” program that it’s the one with the greenest bang for the buck. They’ll pay you up to half the cost to retrofit that gas-guzzling house of yours for up to $4,000 and in the process put a quarter of a million unemployed construction workers back to work lowering your energy costs and carbon footprint. The $23 billion dollar program should retrofit at least 6 million houses, and put a dent in the 17% unemployment rate in the construction industry.

Unlike smaller and postponed tax credits for efficiency, the Home Star program would offer immediate upfront money, making investment into energy efficiency feasible, even in these economic times. In the long term it greatly reduces costs for energy which is literally like blowing dollars out the windows. It will pay up to half for better insulated windows, attics, crawlspaces, more efficient hot water and home heating, white roofing for cooling, etc.

Whatever you choose: if it can lower your energy use 20% you’d get half off - because if there is only one thing that you can do to lower your carbon footprint – retrofitting your house to be energy efficient is that one thing.

As leaders from around the world meet in Copenhagen to address global climate change this month, we thought it was a good time to reflect on our own carbon footprint. In 2007, we committed to become a carbon neutral company. We know that it isn't possible to write a check and eliminate the environmental impact of our operations. So what does “carbon neutrality” mean to us?

First, we aggressively pursue reductions in our energy consumption through energy efficiency, innovative infrastructure design and operations and on-site renewable energy. Our Google designed data centers use half the energy of typical facilities. We're also working to accelerate the development of economic, clean renewable energy at scale through research and development, investment and policy outreach. At this time, however, such efforts don't cover our entire carbon footprint. Therefore, since 2007 we've gone a step further and made a voluntary commitment to buy carbon offsets to cover the portion of our footprint that we cannot yet eliminate — which is what we mean by "carbon neutrality."

So what exactly is a carbon offset? The idea behind an offset is that we pay someone to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in a specific, measurable way, thus offseting an equal climate impact on our side. To determine our impact, we calculate our annual carbon footprint, which is then verified by an independent third party. We include direct energy consumption (like natural gas) and electricity use, employee commuting, company vehicle use, business travel and estimates of carbon emissions from building construction and from the manufacturing of servers used in our datacenters. We then buy an equivalent number of carbon offsets.

While carbon offsets seem simple in principle, in practice they are surprisingly complicated. In particular, it's often difficult to say whether or not the offset project results in emissions reductions that would have happened anyway. We find ourselves asking whether the project in fact goes beyond "business as usual." In the world of offsets, this concept is referred to as "additionality." Carbon offsets have a mixed reputation because some projects are not additional. Here at Google, we have set a very high bar to ensure that our investment makes an actual difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing offsets that are real, verifiable, permanent and additional.

To date, we have selected high quality carbon offsets from around the world that reduce greenhouse gas emissions — ranging from landfill gas projects in Caldwell County, NC, and Steuben County, NY, to animal-waste management systems in Mexico and Brazil. Our funding helps make it possible for equipment to be installed that captures and destroys the methane gas produced as the waste decomposes. Methane, the primary component in natural gas, is a significant contributor to global warming. We chose to focus on landfill and agricultural methane reduction projects because methane's impact on warming is very well understood, it's easy to measure how much methane is captured and the capture wouldn't happen without our financing (for the projects we're investing in, they couldn't make enough money selling the gas).

We need fundamental changes to global energy and transportation infrastructure to stabilize greenhouse gas emissions over the long term. In the meantime, the projects to which we contribute offer measurable emissions reductions and allow us to take responsibility for our carbon footprint. Avoid the last minute supermarket dash - head for your local farmer's market or farm shop instead to stock up on food for the festive season.

A weekly veg box makes life easier and saves you lugging round bags of potatoes and carrots. It also saves you a potential drive to the market - a big chunk of your food-related emissions.

Go for a free range, preferably organic, turkey - order from your local butcher in advance - or get an organic one delivered to your door from an organic online butcher.

For meat free Christmas ideas, the Vegetarian Society and the Vegan Society have recipes for soups, nut roasts, pies, stuffing and puddings.

For fresh, green seasoning keep pots of evergreen herbs growing close to the kitchen. Herbs that can survive the winter outside include rosemary (add sprigs to soups, casseroles or sprinkle over roast potatoes or meat); sage (a delicious addition to stuffing and nut roasts) and parsley (a favorite for sauces and soups).

Alcohol

Get the party going with organic wine, beer, cider and spirits and know that your hangover will be that little bit healthier.

On the subject of hangovers, you might also want to try some milk thistle, a detoxifying, immune-boosting herb well known for its ability to enhance liver function. It's available as a tincture from most health food shops.

Christmas Trees

Rent a living Christmas tree. It'll be delivered to your door in a pot (to keep the tree alive) and some feed to keep the tree healthy. When Christmas is over your tree will be collected and returned to the ground.

Buy from a small-scale sustainable grower and/or make sure your Christmas tree has Forest Steward Council (FSC) accreditation.

Have a live Christmas tree in a pot that you can take outside to the garden and use next year. If replanting isn't an option and you buy a cut tree then don't throw it out with the rubbish. Most local councils run Christmas tree recycling schemes, or try www.letsrecycle.com

Declutter, donate, and enjoy!

The economy is uncertain. Is it a bad time to declutter? Maybe we should save what we have in case we need it some day (maybe sooner than we thought)? Perhaps not. Maybe many of us still suffer from an overabundance of stuff. It will be kinder to ourselves and to the world if we continue to clear out clutter, especially if we can weed out wisely.

If you are having tough economic times, consider using the Internet and other avenues to sell items you don't need. Maybe the cash to pay bills and put food on the table would be more helpful to you right now than the extra stuff at home. Think about wants versus needs as you look through your stuff.

If your circumstances are okay but you are still mired down with extra stuff, consider donating to your favorite charity. When you donate to charity, you help the charity as well as the people who ultimately receive your extras. You also help yourself by creating open spaces in your home as well as time and energy for your priorities.

There is a bonus. We are not just helping ourselves and other people when we donate our extra household goods. We are living green by not adding to a landfill and contributing to our environmental problems. Our extras are finding homes where they are needed and appreciated instead of going to waste.

Maybe our instinct right now is to cling to our stuff. If we have too much and our clutter is draining and frustrating us, then now, more than ever, it is time to let it go. We can relearn that happiness doesn't come from stuff. Acquiring more and more stuff hasn't made people happier and happier.

We have all seen modest uncluttered homes that glow with love and energy--homes where anything is possible: reading a book, playing a game, having a spontaneous get-together with friends or neighbors. Sadly, we have also seen expensive stuff-filled homes that seem to suck the vitality from their owners--homes where the owners would feel too depressed by the clutter around them to sit and read a book, or maybe they wouldn't be able to find the game under the piles of stuff, or perhaps they would be too embarrassed to invite neighbors in to visit.

Maybe it is how we live rather than what we have that creates joy. Perhaps it doesn't matter how much we have. What Can We Do About Climate Change?

Greenhouse gasses that have already been emitted, but still have not had their full effect on climate, will cause the temperature to rise even more – even if all emissions are halted today. Thus, it is sensible to adapt to climate change that will occur anyway.

At the same time, the situation is such that if we continue to emit greenhouse gases, the global temperature will rise even higher and the consequences of climate change will become even more serious. Therefore, it is important that emissions of greenhouse gases are reduced.

Adapting to climate change

* Cultivate plants that are better adapted to the new climate than those we grow today.
* Build houses, roads and bridges that can withstand more extreme weather (where it can be expected).
* Prohibit building in areas that are more vulnerable to floods.
* Build dikes to keep the sea at bay if sea levels rise.

The IPCC maintains that adaptations alone will probably not be enough to cope with the expected impacts of climate change, and especially not in the long term when they become bigger. Therefore, it is also necessary to reduce emissions to avoid these more serious changes.

Emission reductions

Emissions of greenhouse gases come from the use of coal, oil, and gas in such applications as power plants, cars, and airplanes, as well as from deforestation, certain industrial processes, and agriculture. The IPCC has evaluated the measures that can be both effective and economical internationally. They found that:

* By using energy more efficiently in buildings, we can avoid at least 30 percent of the expected emissions by 2030, and have an economic gain at the same time!
* Emissions from power production can be reduced by changing from coal to gas, using renewable energy and nuclear power, as well as implementing carbon capture and storage.
* Emissions from transportation can be reduced with the help of fuel-efficient vehicles, more use of public transport, and more cycling and walking.
* Many outdated and inefficient industrial plants are still in use. Upgrading these plants can reduce emissions significantly.
* Reducing deforestation in the tropics will halt a large amount of CO2 emissions while preserving biodiversity.

All these measures are technological in nature: They mainly concern other methods of obtaining energy or using it more efficiently. Another way to reduce emissions is to change behavior. We can reduce emissions by reducing the consumption of energy and energy-hungry goods. The IPCC maintains that behavior change can contribute to emission reductions in all sectors. Changing lifestyle and consumption patterns to make better use of resources can contribute to a low-emission economy that is both just and sustainable.

Climate-friendly cars

Cars produce a considerable amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, some models emit somewhat less than average, and many people expect that in the course of a few years, car manufacturers will begin to sell cars with far lower emissions than those today. There are many different technologies that can reduce emissions from cars:

* Even today, many cars run on biofuel. Since the fuel is biological in nature, many people believe that these cars are climate-neutral. However, there are many challenges related to biofuel, among which are greenhouse gas emissions during production and the issue of whether top-soil should be used to produce fuels.
* Cars that run on hydrogen fuel cells emit nothing but pure water! However, energy is required to generate the hydrogen fuel, and this process must also be as climate-friendly as the hydrogen cars are supposed to be.
* Electric cars run on electricity and produce no direct emissions! As for hydrogen cars, the electricity must be produced in a climate-friendly way. Another problem is to build longer-lasting and lighter batteries so that the cars can be driven long distances without having to be recharged.
* Hybrid cars can run on either electricity or ordinary fuel – either fossil fuel or biofuel. Many people have great faith that these cars can help us to reduce vehicle emissions for a period before they are replaced by those that run only on electricity or hydrogen.

Why is it important to recycle glass?

Unlike other packing materials, glass is 100 percent recyclable 100 percent of the time. Glass recyclers and makers are calling all Americans to recycle more glass.

The United States does not mandate the recycling of glass. Many counties do not have adequate facilities to sort plastic, paper and other recyclable materials from glass. This is known as single-stream recycling and leaves a greater chance of glass being contaminated by other materials and therefore unusable for recycling. Of the 17 million tons of glass (also known as cullet) in the waste stream, only about 2.5 millon tons are reused by glassmakers every year.

So how can you help? Start by talking to your local representative about starting a deposit program for recycling glass. This will increase the chance that deposited glass will actually be recycled and reused to make new glass items.

Another way to help is to get your community to start multi-stream recycling. This means that you take on more responsibility in the recycling process by sorting your own items for pick-up.

Usually, this means you get three bins, one for paper, one for plastics and one for glass recycling. Finally, make sure that restaurants and bars in your community have recycling programs in place.

Research conducted by O-I shows that if the United States were to increase glass recycling by only 10 percent, manufacturers would see a 2.5 percent reduction in energy required for bottle production, a 10 percent reduction of sulfur oxides, an eight percent reducion in particulates and a four percent reduction in nitrogen oxide. And, all of this glass being recycled means it won't spend an eternity in a landfill.

The EPA estimates that if 50 percent of cullet was reused, the domestic energy savings would be enough to power more than 45,000 households for a year! Recycling glass helps you and the environment.

So get involved, talk to local representatives and do your part to make sure that as much glass as possible is reused.

10 Green Ways To Keep Cool Without An Air Conditioner

It's tempting to turn on an air conditioner during hot weather, but that's not a green way to stay cool.

According to the US Department of Energy, across the nation energy use for home cooling is second only to heating (and tied with water heating). Our latest heat wave last July broke the summer record for PGE customers' energy consumption, and caused power outages across the region due to demand overload.

And in addition to the energy consumption, there are environmental concerns with the refrigerants used in air conditioning units, especially R-22, which releases ozone-destroying hydrocarbons into the air. In fact, the government has banned R-22, effective in 2010.

So if you don’t have an air conditioner, or would rather not use one because of the effect on the environment, how can you stay cool during a heat wave? Here are ten methods to try:

Simple things you can do right away (provided you have a fan or two)

1. Close your windows and doors and shut the curtains and blinds In the morning while your indoor air is still cool, before the day warms up. Exterior blinds and shutters keep heat out better than indoor window coverings.

2. After the sun has gone down, open your windows to take advantage of the cooler night air and any evening breezes. This is the time to turn on a fan to magnify the effect. You can even create your own "wind tunnel" by putting one fan by one window to pull cool air in, and another fan by an opposite window to push warm air out.

3. Turn off your lights during the day and don’t run appliances—they’ll just heat up your house. Save any baking or stovetop cooking for the evening or early morning. Better yet, serve cold meals so you don’t have to turn the oven or range on at all. Likewise, don’t use your dishwasher clothes washer or dryer during the heat of the day. If you use a clothesline you can take advantage of the sun and skip your dryer all together.

4. Dampen a neckerchief and wrap it around your neck, or slip on wet wrist bands. Hold a cloth-wrapped ice cube against your pulse points, and you’ll experience an immediate cool-down effect, as much as three degrees, that will last up to an hour.

5. Wet your shirt sleeves or pants legs, find a breeze or stand in front of a fan, and you may even feel cold. Or, find a shady spot outside and fill a children’s wading pool or a washtub with water and stand or sit in it.

6. Position a fan to blow over a block or bowl of ice, and you’ll be rewarded with a blast of cool air.

Methods that require upfront costs or installation

7. Plant shade trees on the south and west sides of your home, particularly deciduous trees. As they mature, they will keep your house noticeably cooler in the summer.

8. Install a ceiling fan to circulate air. Though they do require some money to install, they cost only a fraction of the amount it takes to install and run an conditioner.

9. Use an evaporative cooler, also known as a swamp cooler. You can get a unit installed (it will take much less energy to operate than an air-conditioning unit) or buy a portable model. Evaporative coolers work best during hot and dry days, not humid ones.

10. Install an attic fan to cool the house by ventilating the attic. Unventilated attics trap the hot air under the roof. The effect is like laying a large heavy blanket over your house, making it harder to cool the air inside. A solar attic fan doesn’t even need electricity to operate, and it’s comparatively inexpensive. In addition, federal tax credits and other incentives could pay almost a third of the cost.

Small cardboard boxes make great planters to start seedlings.
Cut them in half, so you have a couple of narrow cardboard boxes.
Fill with potting soil and plant some seeds.
You can then plant it directly into your garden once the seedlings are established.

Cardboard can also be used as a weed barrier.
Flatten and lay out the cardboard in an area.
Hold it down with rocks until the sun and rain cause it to stick to the ground.
Cover with a thin layer of soil.
The cardboard will then decompose in your garden and prevent weeds!

Green building standards may not seem to be on the front burner of commercial real estate as much this year as last, simply because very little new development is breaking ground these days. Yet think and planning and policy shifts regarding sustainable real estate go on, anticipating the day when development will begin again.

Perhaps one of the most far-reaching of these shifts is the slow movement from voluntary green standards to green mandates. In the United States, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) by the U.S. Green Building Council is the commercial real estate hallmark of such green building standards, but previously the standards were all voluntary. Now cities and other localities are the main driving forces behind mandating green building codes, which typically incorporate parts of LEED, and observers expect a more serious push in a greenward direction by the federal government now that Barack Obama is president.

Perhaps most notably among the cities, in the fall of 2008 San Francisco enacted an ordinance that mandates green building standards to new commercial structures over 5,000 square feet--most everything, in other words. New residential construction over 75 feet high (that, most multifamily properties) also fall under the new mandate, as do any building renovation involving a structure larger than 25,000 square feet. New or renovated buildings in the city now have to conform to relevant LEED or other building standards, though in practical terms that means LEED will predominate.

Moreover, there are movements toward mandating LEED or elements of LEED in such diverse places as Austin, Dallas, Portland, Ore., and Seattle. Adherence to LEED or part of LEED will probably become a condition of entitlement in these and other places in the near future.

Some stares are also having their say. In late 2008, the California Building Standards Commission voted to mandate measures among building owners that will reduce energy and water use, along with encouraging the recycling of construction waste and other green measures. For now, the code is voluntary, but it's going to be phased in over the next few years.

The upshot for commercial real estate interests is that now is the time to figure out what green means in terms of their business--what to do, how to pay for it, and how to make it pay. “Most of my clients are already acquainting themselves with green standards, and some are actively pursuing green in their properties and business,” Michael Lingerfelt, president of Orlando-based architecture firm Lingerfelt International, told CPN.

As an example, Lingerfelt cited a major chain of causal-dining restaurants. “The company is looking at sustainability in every aspect of its operations, including where the food comes from and how it's prepared and presented, but also the restaurants themselves, inside and out,” he said. “Among many other initiatives, the company is investigating power generation from waste vegetable oil. It might seem like a small thing, but in a chain that size, it will add up.”

Human and Animal Cancer Evidence Prompts Review of Fluoride

On May 29, 2009, over protests by the lobbyists for the American Dental Association and the Personal Care Products Council who oppose further evaluation of fluoride as cancer-causing, the State’s Qualified Experts that comprise the Carcinogen Identification Committee, as advisors to California EPA’s Office of Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). Never-the-less established fluoride and its salts as meriting the highest priority they can recommend for further review toward including fluorides on a Prop 65 list of chemicals for which warnings for risks of cancer, birth defects, and reproductive toxicity are to be publicly posted.

Citing the passage of two pre-screenings that acknowledged the existence of animal and human cancer evidence, as well as widespread exposure, this recommendation places fluoride and its salts as one of the first of 38 chemicals that also passed at least one of the tests to be newly prioritized for Hazard Identification materials preparation.

This hazard identification process is similar to a risk assessment performed to establish a scientific point of safety for lifetime ingestion that is ordered by the Safe Drinking Water Act for chemicals in the water, with the exception that this process will evaluate fluorides from all exposures and restricts the assessment to only the risks of cancer, rather than all adverse heath effects.

Proposition 65 was enacted by voters of California in 1986 to assure that warnings of cancer, birth defects, and reproductive risks are publicly noticed so that consumers and workers are informed of the presence of such chemicals in the posted location, or of their inclusion in products, so that individuals may better control exposures and protections for themselves.

Prop 65 warnings are commonly seen at gas stations and dry cleaning establishments for environmental exposures to the chemicals present, and bars and restaurants that serve alcohol for products that may be ingested and cause birth defects or reproductive harm.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), another fluoride compound, was also separately recommended for the highest priority review.

PFOAs, while technically referring to a class of surfactants, are most commonly recognized by laypersons for their non-stick and non-penetration qualities, which are the basis and sister-chemicals of such products as Scotchgard, Teflon and GoreTex. Some of these products are now to be phased out of production, and restricted in future production, despite their high profitability.

Ranging from water and oil repellants, to non-stain carpets and couches, to waxed paper, this chemical class is listed as used in aircraft production processes, electronic products, personal care products, and thought to be essential in the automotive, chemical, medical, packaging and building/construction industries. Dupont, the primary producer of PFOAs, opposed the recommendation for priority review.

Chemicals that received a lower priority ranking are not expected to receive a timely review.

- 1/2 borax, 1/2 sugar dry mix around an ant hill will kill the ants and the queen.

- cornmeal around your kitchen baseboards will kill indoor ants.

Slugs and Snails:

- putting copper wire in your garden will get rid of snails and slugs.

- crushed egg shells around your plants will also for most bugs and slugs.

Dandelions:

- dig them out as soon as you notice them, then they will not spread.

- maintaining your lawn with a grass height of over three inches allows for your grass to develop deeper roots, leaving little room for weed seeds to germinate

- most experts say that a 6.5 pH level is optimal for growing grass. Since 7.0 pH is the neutral reading, the 6.5 pH level means that grass likes a slightly acidic soil. Dandelions, on the other hand, optimally grow in a 7.5 soil pH level, or a slightly alkaline soil.

- vinegar is a popular organic weed management tool if you want to supplement your digging plan. Apply it directly to the leaves and note that vinegar only kills the leaves and not the root. Root removal is necessary to prevent further growth.

Going Green for Mother's Day!

Hopefully you know by now that Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday. If you are like most Americans, you will be giving your mom flowers. In fact, Mother’s Day is the 2nd biggest floral holiday in the United States, with 70% of gifts being fresh cut flowers.

However, if you are environmentally conscience, then you know that flowers, paradoxically, are one of the least eco-friendly gifts. Most of the fresh cut flowers we get in the U.S. come from Columbia and other South American countries, but some come from Israel and as far away as Thailand and Australia. The flowers are flown, via private jet, with an initial stop off in Holland for a flower auction, before being sent all over our country.

But the good news for Los Angelenos is that we have an alternative in a newly launched company called “Living Arrangements”. Trey Ellet founded the company back in December, and it has been flourishing ever since.

He started displaying them at Farmers Markets and in a short amount of time, it had a following. “They just make sense’, he says. “They are bouquet that lasts longer, and take less water. Which in this city is needed!”

The eco aspect of the company is ingrained in the mission statement and he does a lot to stay as environmentally on track as he can. A favorite item are the “upcycled” pots and cans used to create the arrangements. People can bring in a favorite unused pot or choose from a variety of used containers he has on hand. In fact, if he can drill a hole in it, he can grow a plant in it. And, fortunately, for the environment, he has found that “most Angelenos want to do the right thing.”

What a nice gift for Mom; it stays alive, with very little care, much longer than any bouquet you might buy, each one is unique and adds a bit of green to any house. But, most importantly, isn’t putting a drain on our already fragile eco-system.

Instead of the current LCD (liquid crystal display) panels, it uses OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels which are more efficient in terms of energy consumption and manufacturing processes.

The eco-friendly laptops will be powered through clean fuels such as methyl alcohol or natural gas, and it features a special cylindrical hinge to storage such fuels. All the combined characteristics make this laptop much more environment-friendly than standard products.

The average person will keep a laptop for only three years before it is tossed in the closet or tossed in the garbage, which presses the issue for an even more recyclable laptop. Some issues that still need addressed and some possible solutions:

1. Problem: Petroleum-filled plastic.
Solution: Produce laptops from corn using bioplastic-polymers. The main issue at the point is creating a heat resistant polymer that can withstand the heat from a laptop.

2. Problem: Power Supply.

3. Problem: Lead products in the waste.
Solution: As mentioned above, the European Union has enacted legal restrictions on lead. President Bush has also followed suit with standards for American lead use.

Solution: Future laptops could reduce their energy use up to 10 percent by replacing hard drives with flash memory, which has no watt-hungry moving parts. Dell debuted a laptop with a 32-gigabyte solid-state drive this year.

Earth Day Craft: Magazine Holder

Don't throw away your kids' old cereal boxes, turn them into attractive magazine holders with this handy earth day craft.

What you'll need:

* Empty cereal box
* Scissors
* White acrylic paint or spray paint
* Light green and dark green acrylic paint
* Sponge or leaf shaped foam stamp
* Thin paint brush
* Sand paper or gesso/craft medium (we used Liquitex Basics Gesso)

How to make it:

1. Cut off top of cereal box. Halfway across top of box, cut at a 45 degree angle down to front of your magazine holder, cut straight across then back up other side at the same angle.
2. Lightly sandpaper outside of cereal box. (They are usually shiny, coated paper.) Alternatively you can paint a layer of gesso all over the box. Either one of these methods will help the paint adhere to the box.
3. Spray paint the box white, or paint on with inexpensive sponge brush. Let dry.
4. Cut out leaf shape from sponge or use a leaf shaped foam stamp.
5. Pour out small amount of green paints.
6. Use thin paint brush to add a swirled line all over the box, this is the vine. (See photo.)
7. Sponge paint (or use foam stamp) green leaves on front of box leading to sides of box. First the darker, for background leaves, then lighter for foreground leaves. (See photo.)
8. If painting more than one box, try to connect vines on each box so when set together they will match. (See photo.)

Tips:

* Any kind of decorating technique can be used. (Decoupage, glued fabric scraps, children can do this!)
* Try to decorate the front of the boxes so when lined up they all coordinate with each other.
* Use heavier detergent boxes so the boxes will be sturdier and hold up to younger children messing with them.

Here are some homemade natural pesticide and fungicide recipes for safe natural pest control:

Repel everything from insects to rabbits, kill mold, fungus or mildew, and exterminate pests. All with natural alternatives to chemical pesticides.

Use garlic for gardening pest control, natural pesticide and insect repellent.

Homemade natural pesticide spray

Soak 3 to 4 ounces of chopped garlic bulbs in 2 tablespoons of mineral oil for one day. Dissolve 1 tsp of fish emulsion in a pint of water and add it to your solution.
Stir.
Strain liquid and store in a glass container - not metal!
Dilute 1 part solution to every 20 parts of water.
Kills aphids, mosquitoes, and onion flies.

Homemade pest control and natural insect repellent.

1. If you plant garlic with tomatoes, it will keep away red spider mites.

2. If you plant garlic around fruit trees, it will repel borers.

3. Spray garlic pesticide on sweet potatoes to repel rabbits.

4. Spray ponds with garlic-based oil to kill mosquitoes.

Add four or five pints of water and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to tomato leaves crushed in your vegetable juicer. Strain it. Keep the unused spray refrigerated. Works good on roses too.

Control Gardening Pest With Insecticidal Soap

Has value against flea beetles, aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, and whiteflies, sometimes caterpillars and leafhoppers. Combined with Rotenone, it is more effective. Insecticidal soap works only on direct contact; spray it right on the target. Combined with horticultural or botanical oils, insecticidal soap manages powdery mildew.

Use onion and Mint as bug repellent. Onion and mint are natural flea and beetle repellents.
